The mat can be used by setting it on top of your flooring, but it can also be recessed. Recessing the mat was great solution for updating damaged tiles by my deck slider. First I removed more than just the damaged tile to create a full width channel which looked better with the slider. I then cut the mat to size and placed it into the recess.
